The Man Sitting in His Car Not Sure How to Go Back Inside — This Episode Is for Him

May 25, 2026•4 min read

Jon ended this episode with a question that stopped us cold. He asked EJ and Tarah to speak directly to one man — the man sitting in his car outside his house, not sure how to walk back in and be present with his partner. In 30 seconds.

Tarah’s answer: you don’t have to be alone. And that script you’ve been running — that you really can’t depend on anyone other than yourself — that script might be challengeable. And it might actually feel really good to find that out.

This episode is built entirely around that man.

Why the Things That Made You Successful Are Destroying Your Relationship

EJ and Tarah open with something that most couples therapists never say out loud: the adaptive traits that got you out of adolescence — the ability to handle pressure without reacting, the rugged self-sufficiency, the compartmentalization, the high-performance drive — those same traits become weapons in intimate relationship. They work everywhere else. In a marriage, in a partnership, with your kids, they fire in all the wrong directions.

The first thing they do with every couple is a genogram — a structural breakdown from grandparents down, mapping patterns of abuse, trauma, emotional cutoff, and attunement. Not to assign blame. To build compassion. Because when a man understands that the reason he hides in shutdowns goes back to hiding in a closet while his parents fought, suddenly his wife sees something other than indifference. And suddenly he does too.

EJ’s Confession — and What Changed

EJ is a yoga teacher, a therapist, and by all external appearances the most mindful person in any room. He was also, for years after his wedding, profoundly avoidant in a way he couldn’t see. Tarah called it out over and over. He would insist he was fine. He would insist he was the regulated one.

What he was actually doing was confusing hypo arousal for calm. He was shutting down — going insular, managing Tarah’s emotions by suppressing his own — and calling that regulation. His whole inner infrastructure was built on ‘I’m fine.’ It had worked in every other area of his life. In a marriage, it was invisible damage accumulating daily.

The shift came in baby steps. His mantra: she is suffering right now. Swapping the internal judgment — what is wrong with her? — for a recognition that what looks dysregulated is often just pain. That shift in framing is what started building the emotional safety that eventually changed everything for both of them.

FINE — and the Triple H

Jon introduced one of the most useful acronyms we’ve shared on this show: FINE. Feelings Inside Not Expressed. EJ and Tarah are taking it to their entire therapist network.

And Jon added the second tool: before trying to help, ask three questions. Do you need to be heard? Do you need to be hugged? Or do you need to be helped? EJ and Tarah have it in their couples homework book. It sounds almost too simple. It changes everything when men actually use it.

Your Partner Is Your Greatest Teacher

The reframe that runs through everything EJ and Tarah teach is this: your partner isn’t triggering you to hurt you. They’re triggering your growth edges. Every time you feel rejected, every time you feel controlled, every time you feel unseen — that feeling is pointing at something that was unfinished long before this relationship existed. The invitation is not to escape it. The invitation is to turn toward it and ask: what is this trying to show me?

That’s not therapy language. That’s the lived experience of two therapists who were brought to their knees by their own marriage and came out the other side with something real.
