The Peptide Science Everyone Is Talking About — And the Doctor Who’s Been Proving It for 25 Years
Everyone seems to be talking about peptides.
Ozempic, BPC-157, ipamorelin, SEMAX — these names are appearing in every wellness conversation, every biohacking podcast, every men’s health thread. And with that attention has come an enormous amount of hype, confusion, and frankly dangerous purchasing behavior.
Dr. Mark Gordon has been doing this work for 25 years. He is the medical director of the Warrior Angel Foundation, where he’s treated thousands of veterans and first responders with neuroinflammation-driven conditions. He’s appeared on Joe Rogan six times. And his new book, Peptides for Health, is designed to hand people the clearest map he’s ever produced for understanding what peptides actually do.
In this episode of Men Talking Mindfulness, he joined Will to cut through the noise.
What a Peptide Actually Is
A peptide, Dr. Gordon explained, is a chain of amino acids — a hundred or fewer. That upper limit matters, because it’s what makes them non-patentable. You can’t own a molecule your body already makes. This is why multiple pharmaceutical companies are currently trying to get the FDA to redefine the upper limit from 100 to 40 amino acids — so they can patent the next blockbuster.
Think of peptides as biochemical signals. Messengers. Your body already makes them. They go to cells and say: grow hair, repair the gut, produce more energy, reduce inflammation, regenerate the nerve. And because the body recognizes them, it processes them quickly — most are enzymatically inactivated within 15 to 30 minutes. They do their job and leave.
“They’re not the panacea,” Dr. Gordon said immediately. “They’re a tool. Lifestyle is still the foundation.”
What Happens Inside the Brain After Trauma
Much of Dr. Gordon’s work over the past decade has focused on traumatic brain injury and PTSD — particularly in veterans and contact sport athletes.
When the brain experiences impact or blast wave, it triggers something called mechanotransduction — the mere physical collision of nerve cells releases inflammatory free radicals. Those free radicals activate immune cells in the brain (microglia), which dump inflammatory chemicals (cytokines) into the neural environment. That inflammation shuts off the chemical pathways the brain needs to produce dopamine, serotonin, testosterone, DHEA, and every other neurochemical that keeps you functional.
PTSD, anxiety, depression, emotional volatility — Dr. Gordon frames all of these not primarily as psychological disorders, but as downstream consequences of unresolved neuroinflammation. Until the inflammation is addressed, talk therapy is like doing rehab on a knee that hasn’t had the surgery.
The most striking case he shared: a Navy lieutenant in charge of the nuclear power plant on a Nimitz-class carrier. He retires in 2020, then develops vision loss, motor problems, cognitive impairment. The VA diagnoses him with MS and recommends treatment he refuses because the side effects can be as dangerous as the disease. He drives home, turns on the radio at exactly the moment Dr. Gordon is being discussed. Twelve weeks later, he’s 90% better. At 14 weeks, on SEMAX (a peptide that stimulates BDNF and nerve regeneration), 100% in remission.
He’s been in remission since November 2023.
Why Men Are Rusting From the Inside
This was the part of the conversation that stopped Will cold.
Women who menstruate release excess stored iron regularly. Men don’t. Which means men accumulate stored iron over decades, and that iron eventually causes real damage at the cellular level.
Here’s the mechanism: a critical antioxidant in the mitochondria (superoxide dismutase) needs to pair with manganese to stay anti-inflammatory. But iron and manganese compete for absorption through the same pathway — and the body prioritizes iron every time. So manganese gets crowded out, the antioxidant pairs with iron instead, and it flips from anti-inflammatory to pro-inflammatory.
“Your mitochondria are effectively rusting from the inside,” Dr. Gordon said.
Since the heart has the third-highest concentration of mitochondria in the body (after the brain and, in women, eggs), this mechanism may explain a pattern researchers have long observed: men develop heart disease earlier, and women’s risk climbs sharply at menopause, right when their iron stores start accumulating the same way men’s always have.
Quality Is Non-Negotiable
The peptide market has exploded. And with it, a flood of cheap, impure products from India and China that look legitimate online, come with fake certificates of analysis, and in three cases Dr. Gordon knows personally, sent patients to the emergency room with anaphylactic reactions.
The allergic reactions weren’t from the peptides. They were from the fragments — breakdown products from incomplete synthesis, leftover in the vial alongside the active compound.
“Cheap isn’t safe,” he said plainly. “I can take a little vial, go to the toilet, dip it in the toilet, put a cap on it, seal it, print out my own COA, and say it’s pure.”
What to look for: US manufacturer with a 503A or 503B pharmacy rating. HPLC (high pressure liquid chromatography) testing showing 99.9% purity. A company that will stand behind its process publicly. A doctor who prioritizes patient outcomes over revenue and can point you toward sourcing they trust personally.
This conversation is for general education and is not medical advice. Talk to your own clinician before starting any peptide or hormone therapy.
